About Us

Making Science Accessible to Everyone

TheScienceBreaker bridges the gap between scientific research and the general public through concise, engaging summaries written by scientists themselves.

Our Story

Founded in January 2015 at the University of Geneva, TheScienceBreaker was born from a simple idea: scientists are the best people to explain their own work.

What started as a small initiative has grown into an international platform spanning eight scientific disciplines, with over 1,200 contributing researchers from institutions worldwide.

Our Language

What is a Break?

A Break is a short, accessible summary of a peer-reviewed scientific paper. Written in plain language, it distills complex research into a clear narrative that anyone can understand and enjoy — no background in science required.

What is a Breaker?

A Breaker is the scientist who writes the Break. They are PhD students, postdocs, professors — the researchers behind the original work. Who better to explain a discovery than the person who made it?

How It Works

01

Scientists Write

Researchers summarize their latest papers in clear, jargon-free language accessible to all.

02

Editors Review

Our editorial team ensures each Break meets our standards for clarity, accuracy and readability.

03

Public Reads

The Break is published on our platform, free for everyone to read, share and discuss.

Our Model

TheScienceBreaker is a Diamond Open Access journal — free to read and free to publish. No subscription fees, no article processing charges. Science should have no paywall, in either direction.

We are sustained by the University of Geneva's Faculty of Science and have been supported by public research funding, including the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). This institutional backing ensures our independence and long-term sustainability.

Who's Behind TheScienceBreaker
